WINTER WEATHER FLYING
With cold weather still upon us, winter flying presents unique challenges that call for prudent planning. We offer tools and features to assist you in preparing for unpredictable winter conditions:
CHECK AVAILABILITY OF COLD WEATHER SERVICES Confirm de-icing, anti-icing and heated hangars at your departure and arrival FBOs. Many FBOs display these services as icons on our airport information pages. If those services are not identified in the FBO listing, visit the FBO website from the FltPlan.com airport information page, or call the FBO directly. CHECK THE MOS WEATHER FORECAST MOS forecasts provide weather data for up to 4 days out, presented in 3-hour windows and refreshed hourly. MOS forecasts include practical details, including temperature, ceiling height, visibility, wind speed and direction, probability of precipitation and precipitation type. Potentially significant, location-specific factors — such as terrain characteristics and weather anomalies that aren’t accounted for in traditional forecasts — are also factored in to the MOS forecast. MOS forecasts are available for more than 2,000 airports. If your location doesn’t have a MOS forecast, we’ll provide information for the nearest one that does. CHECK ICING FORECASTS WITH THE GARMIN PILOT™ APP Weather options include icing severity and probability forecasts that are designed to enhance safety during your winter flights1. Icing severity forecasts indicate how quickly ice is likely to accumulate on your airplane, while icing probability forecasts display the likelihood that any type of icing threat will exist in that area. Garmin Pilot is available on the App Store® as a free download for the first 30 days.
